"Another round?" the bartender asks. And... that is the last thing I can remember from the night before!
If this sounds all too familiar, or perhaps stirs up memories from your youth, then you know that sometime last night I became BFF's with Jose Cuervo and its two sons Classico (silver) and Especial (gold). But Mexico's favourite sons have a new addition to the family and all I can say is: Black is the new black.
Having built a long-standing and affectionate relationship throughout my college days with both Jose Cuervo brothers, I consider myself part of the family.
So, when I was given the opportunity to test-drive the father of two of the naughtiest boys on the bar scene, I instantly put my hand up to volunteer. And let me say that I have only been dabbling with the brothers ? this is the 'daddy'. This is real tequila with an interesting twist.
Aged for 18 months in charred white oak American barrel, 'Black' has a softened flavour that is much more appealing to a mature palette ? much like a fine wine. Still, with the distinctive Jose Cuervo bite, the new 'Black' medallion tequila is an experience worth having.
Jose Cuervo recommends you sip 'Black' on the rocks rather than knocking back the shots ? however this did not stop me! (Their argument is that you need to 'take in' the whole 'Black' experience.) From the first sip I took, I was reminded of my college days of wild all-night parties and cruising bars checking out the talent, but with one major difference ? I made it to work the next morning on time and didn't have to scrape my face off the bathroom floor in the process!
Associating itself with the sophistication and elegance that the colour connotes, 'Black' is flavoured more like a malt bourbon than a standard tequila and is more likely to become a favourite for those whose wild party days are behind them.
But don't be fooled by its attractive packaging or rustic-looking wooden casing, as a night on the town with the daddy of all tequilas could certainly end up like a night out with his brothers Silver or Gold. But, everything in moderation is always a safe bet and I would recommend really absorbing the taste of 'Black' the way it is intended.
Sadly for me, gone are the days of drinking cheap thrills that cost less than a packet of two-minute noodles...
But I'm ok with this as my new favourite 'father' has revived the tequila monster in me, brought back some good memories, and renewed my faith that tequila is indeed a drink for all ages!
