Not one, but two current-release wines have received the ultimate accolade, a five-star rating, in Wine magazine's recent category tasting of Bordeaux-style red blends.

The Diemersdal Private Collection 2006 and Warwick Trilogy 2005 were declared "world class" in a line-up of 123 wines spanning vintages from 2002 to 2008. They join a rarified group of only 31 wines to collect this rating since the magazine came into being in October 1993.

The tasting also produced three 4.5-Star winners ? the Hermanuspietersfontein Kleinboet 2006, Saronsberg Seismic 2006 and Tokara 2006 ? and a further six wines rated four-star, confirmation that this remains a very accomplished category within the South African context.

The Diemersdal Private Collection 2006 is a steal at only R85. The panel described it as "an elegant wine showing flavours of cassis and a light spiciness. Excellent balance between juicy fruit and fine tannins. Medium bodied with a persistent finish" and suggest it will show well for up to seven years.

The Warwick Trilogy 2005 sells for R400 a bottle. The judges describe it as having cassis, violets and attractive oak spice on the nose and ripe, black fruit and firm tannins on the palate. "Good fruit expression, smooth textured; an excellent example in the modern idiom that will keep for two to six years."

The full results of the category tasting are in the August issue of Wine magazine.
