What can be nicer than chilled, sweet fresh figs on a summers day, either on their own, or served with watermelon cubes and a sprinkling of goat's cheese and fresh basil leaves?

Also one of my favourites is figs with a balsamic reduction and watermelon konfyt, to say nothing about fig preserve and a selection of cheeses with port and coffee…

Today's dessert is a simply dish with few ingredients, but absolutely divine.

It's quick and easy to make and is a perfect dessert for any time of the year, but particularly when fresh figs are freely available.

To serve four portions of figs with white port you need:

Ingredients:

  • 8 figs, halved

  • Juice of one orange

  • Juice of ½ lemon or lime

  • ½ cup white port

  • Four cinnamon sticks

  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • Instructions:

Place the figs in a shallow oven-proof glass dish.

Combine orange juice, lemon and white port and sprinkle over the figs.

Pour the remains around the figs.

Sprinkle the figs with the brown sugar.

Place the cinnamon sticks between the figs.

Place under a hot grill until slightly caramelised.

Delicious served with chilled Greek yoghurt or plain ice cream.
