The La Motte wine farm is situated at the gateway of the beautiful Franschhoek Valley in the Western Cape. They are well-known producers of fine wines which are recognised internationally for their exceptional quality.
Along with this, and in harmony with their production of wines, La Motte has also ventured into flower production and the making of a range of ethereal oils.
There is also something for classical music lovers who can attend the monthly La Motte classical concerts. These are held in the magnificently restored historic cellar and are arranged by owner Hanneli Rupert-Koegelenberg who is one of South Africa's leading mezzo-sopranos performing under her professional name, Hanneli Rupert.
La Motte produces two ranges of wines namely the Pierneef Collection and the Classic Collection.
The Pierneef Collection is a tribute to the famous South African artist, JH Pierneef, whose works illuminate the labels on the bottles. Initially, the Pierneef Collection was launched with two wines, the Shiraz-Viognier and the organically grown Sauvignon Blanc.
Recently in 2006, and as a result of the tremendous success they have had with the Shiraz-Viognier, another wine was added to the collection which is a blend of Shiraz and Grenache.
"At La Motte we start with Shiraz as the base and the younger Grenache grapes add dimension and complexity. We also add a small amount of Mouvedre in an attempt to get the perfect blend and balance. The Shiraz component is from Wellington and Walker Bay while the Grenache and Mouvedre originate from Darling," says Hein Koegelenberg, CEO of La Motte.
The La Motte Pierneef Shiraz Grenache 2007 is a wine that offers seductive whiffs of dark berry fruits with spicy leathery notes. The palate is full and rich with elegant bramble fruit which enhances the long silky finish.
We enjoyed the wine on a cold evening with lamb and rosemary pie and I would not hesitate to keep a few bottles to enjoy in another four to five years from now.
