Fleur du Cap is a well known local wine brand that year on year produces consistently excellent wines. The label is owned by South Africa's largest wine company, Distel, who in turn own The Bergkelder which is where the wines of Fleur du Cap are made.
Fleur du Cap's Unfiltered Collection is a range of beautifully made single variety wines often considered as benchmarks in the industry and the Fleur du Cap Range offers wines from premium level to excellent everyday drinking wines.
Their success in the market place and with the many awards received at competitions is, as cellarmaster Andrea Freeborough puts it, "due to the dedication and commitment of everyone involved from our producers and viticulturist to the winemaking team and all the staff in the cellar."
One of the pioneers and cellarmaster of The Bergkelder for 15 years was Dr Julius Laszlo. His pioneering work with classic varieties and equally classic winemaking techniques made an inestimable contribution to the advances of Cape wines.
Laszlo also broke new ground by implementing the use of small oak barrels for the maturation of red wines in the Cape. The Fleur du Cap Laszlo 2006 is therefore a fitting tribute the man who almost single-handedly catapulted South African winemaking into the international league in the 1980?s!
Present cellarmaster Andrea Freeborough, together with her red winemaking team at The Bergkelder, crafted the Laszlo 2006 from the finest barrels of noble varieties, which Dr Laszlo had himself helped to establish. After extensive barrel selection and blending trials, the team selected the final blend for this special wine comprising 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 18% Shiraz, 6% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec.
The Fleur du Cap Laszlo 2006 has an intense deep purple colour with a youthful hue. The initial aromas are of complex layers of cedar, cassis with hints of Christmas cake and cinnamon. The palate is rich and full bodied with voluptuous flavours of black cherries, smoky cedar spice with a perfect relationship between fruit and grape tannins on the finish.
Marlene van der Westhuizen of The Food Studio in Green Point, Cape Town had prepared her delicious Osso Buco Milanese ? a very old Milanese recipe in a lighter style using allspice and cinnamon to show off the wine. Marlene had researched this well as the flavours of both the food and wine were sublime together.
This wine is a must for any collector and will reward you in the years to come. The wine has sufficient freshness and structure to ensure maturation for up to 8 years.
